German travel words: 30 words with example sentences

30 essential German words for travel: English meanings, example sentences and translations. With a mini exercise and FAQ; our own list.

When you travel in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, words for tickets, stations, delays and directions are very useful. Because rail and bus networks are busy, being able to hear these words matters too. We compiled these 30 words ourselves; they are not taken from an official list (beginner, around A1–A2).

How to use this list

  • Try “Wo ist …?” with every place: “Wo ist der Bahnhof?”
  • For announcements, learn words such as “Verspätung”, “Gleis” and “Abfahrt” by listening.
  • Repeat the direction words (links, rechts, geradeaus) aloud.

Making the list stick

Reading a list once is not enough; you need to review words spread over time. Pick 5 words a day, try to recall their meanings that evening without looking, and test yourself again a few days later. We explain the idea in what is spaced repetition. For a general starting point in German, see the German guide.

In Frigya you can add German, choose any of the A1–C2 levels, meet new words in Discover and reinforce them with spaced repetition in Learn; you can start without an account. Download Frigya.
